This is George IV’s copy of the Order of Service performed at his Coronation in July 1821. The King signed it: ‘I used this book at my Coronation. George R’. Extravagant as ever, George ensured that his Coronation was a magnificent affair. Costing around £250,000 (his father George III’s had cost around £10,000), it revived pageantry on a scale not seen since the reign of Elizabeth I.
Provenance
Purchased by King George V from J. Pearson & Co. in 1928; transferred to the Royal Library in July 1930.
