-
Sir Thomas Herbert was a parliamentarian appointed to attend Charles I during the last years of his life. 'Threnodia Carolina', an account of Herbert's time with Charles I while he was in captivity, was printed in 1678. This manuscript, written in a seventeenth-century hand, is either the original or an early copy. Pasted into the manuscript is a letter apparently from Charles I, recommending Thomas Herbert to future employers.
Provenance
Passed via Thomas Herbert's wife's second marriage through the Edmunds family; presented to the Royal Collection in 1933
