Charles I, King of Great Britain (1600-49)
Autograph letters written during his captivity in the Isle of Wight 12th July to 30th Decr. 1648 / by King Charles I 1648

-
Letters written by King Charles I when in captivity in Carisbrooke Castle on the Isle of Wight, in an attempt to arrange an escape. They were smuggled out by the "necessary woman", so had to be folded to a small size. Names were encoded by a prearranged set of numbers, in case the letters were intercepted, and named persons within incriminated as King Charles's supporters.
