On the Sublime (Greek: Peri Hypsous) is a Greek text formerly attributed to the third century AD philosopher Cassius Longinus due to a mistranslation of an attribution added to a manuscript in the tenth century. It was written in the first century AD by an unknown author and is one of the most important texts on aesthetics in the Roman world. It primarily discusses examples of good writing from the ancient world and argues that the best writing would guide readers and listeners to experience a state of heightened emotion known as the ‘sublime’.
This 1555 edition was printed at Venice by Paulus Manutius, the third son of Aldus Manutius.
Provenance
Formerly in the collection of French bibliographer and industrialist, Antoine-Augustin Renouard. Acquired by Queen Victoria.
