This four volume set, comprising of Jane Austen's hitherto unpublished works Persuasion and Northanger Abbey, was first published posthumously by her brother in December 1817. Northanger Abbey was written by Austen to entertain her family by the fireside and as such, it is a light-hearted work which satirises the Gothic novels and the cult of the picturesque which were very popular in the late eighteenth century.
