The discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun by Howard Carter and George Herbert, Earl of Carnarvon in 1922 caused an international sensation. It was the first time a Pharaonic tomb had been uncovered almost intact and provided the archaeological world with a glimpse into a royal burial of the 18th Dynasty (c. 1543-1262 BC). The discovery also entered popular culture with the death of Carnarvon soon after the tomb was uncovered, leading some to speculate upon the 'Curse of the Pharaohs', and with several exhibitions of the treasures taking place around the world.
