Coomassie and Magdala : the story of two British campaigns in Africa / by Henry M. Stanley. 1874
RCIN 1078861
-
Famed for his 1869 expedition in search of David Livingstone, Stanley would return to Africa in 1874 to lead a major expedition to explore the Congo basin, an account of which he published in 1878. Stanley’s books led to many of the late nineteenth century perceptions of Africa as ‘Darkest Africa’ or the ‘Dark Continent’, a term that he invented. This book contains his account of major British campaigns against African states, particularly the Third Anglo-Ashanti War and the sacking of Kumasi in 1874 and the earlier Battle of Magdala during the 1867-8 Expedition to Ethiopia (also known as the Abyssinia Expedition).
