Henry Lansdell, missionary, bold traveller, prison visitor, for whom no destination was too inaccessible, first started his journeys in the 1870s, first to the accessible parts of Europe, and then to far-flung parts of Asia, where his main focus was to distribute tracts and Bibles in several languages to the native population. Through Siberia was his first book, recounting his journey of May to September 1879, and it became very popular, going into five editions and published in German, Danish and Swedish.
In the preface he states that he has chosen to give a broader picture of Siberia than was warranted by his own (not inconsiderable) experiences, and has thus supplemented those from other sources. His chief object was to visit the prisons and other penal institutions with philanthropy rather than administration in mind, and to record a rather more accurate view of them than had hitherto been available. ‘It has been comparatively easy … in England for writers to exaggerate on this subject [prisons] almost as they pleased, because scarcely any one could contradict them’. The map of his travels shows the length of his journey from west to east, from Archangel to Vladivostok, amazingly accomplished entirely through interpreters, for ‘I do not even speak Russ’
