George Chaworth Musters was a British naval officer known for his travels in South America in the 1860s and 1870s. Following a series of postings on Royal Navy ships during the Crimean War, in 1861, Musters briefly served aboard the Royal Yacht Victoria and Albert before being transferred to HMS Stromboli later in the year. With Stromboli, he travelled to South America, spending several years working along the coasts of Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina. In 1866, Musters purchased a farm near Montevideo and two years later started on an expedition to Patagonia, where he lived with the Tehuelche people, travelling with a group from the Magellan Strait to the Rio Negro before crossing the northern part of Patagonia from east to west. On his return to Britain in 1871, he published this account of the journey. At Home with the Patagonians was a popular work and earned Musters a medal from the Royal Geographical Society in 1872. He also became popularly known within Britain as ‘The King of Patagonia’. A second edition was published in 1873. That same year, Musters returned to South America, travelling through Bolivia with his wife. He died in Mozambique in 1879, having been appointed consul there the previous year.
