This book contains the plates for the Britannia Depicta volumes on Bedfordshire, Berkshire and Buckinghamshire. The series intended to consist of illustrations of picturesque views of towns, cities and the surrounding countryside in each county in Great Britain engraved from drawings by some of the eminent topographical artists of the day, including JMW Turner and the diarist Joseph Farington. It was to serve as a companion to the large topographical survey, Magna Britannia by Daniel and Samuel Lysons.
However, beset by delays and a lack of interest from potential subscribers — those with the money to fund such a large series preferring to wait until the volume containing their home county was being prepared — the project was cancelled with only four volumes having been printed.
