A facsimile of an Ethiopian manuscript on the life and teachings of the 13th century Ethiopian monk Takla Haymanot (BL Oriental 723), privately printed by Lady Valorie Meux.
In 1902, Ras Makonnen, then Governor of Harar in Ethiopia, travelled to London for the Coronation of King Edward VII. During his stay, he visited Lady Meux and admired her collection of Ethiopian manuscripts. She subsequently decided to reproduce an Ethiopian illustrated manuscript for him and chose one of the manuscripts then held in the British Museum (now in the British Library).
The two volumes comprise 165 full-page chromolithographs reproducing the pages of the manuscript, English translations made by E. A. Wallis Budge of the British Museum, and a typeset version of the Ethiopian (Geez) text.Provenance
Presented to Queen Mary by Sir Ernest Wallis Budge on 14 April 1911. -
