William Rathbone was a Liberal politician and philanthropist. Following Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee in 1887, Rathbone established Queen Victoria’s Jubilee Institute for Nurses (later the Queen’s Nursing Institute) using money donated by women. The Institute intended to organise the training of district nurses across the country. This study of the history of nursing was written by Rathbone with an introduction by Florence Nightingale.
