This is the first edition of Walton’s famous book, published when he was sixty. It was cast in the form of a dialogue between Piscator and Viator (the Angler and the Rambler); the second edition expanded the conversational possibilities with Piscator, Venator and Auceps (the Angler, the Huntsman and the Fowler). It reflects his cheerful character and the charm of manner that made him, from humble origins, obtain the friendship of many learned churchmen. The text also reflects his love of music and poetry, with songs scattered throughout the text, and a two-part Angler’s song towards the end. This opening shows the methods required to catch carp, with a copper engraving of the fish. This copy of the book was bought for George IV when Prince Regent from Thomas Payne the bookseller, and was part of his library at Carlton House.
