Edward Morris was Professor of Modern Languages at the University of Melbourne in the late nineteenth century and is notable for this dictionary on the English used in Australia and New Zealand. While he was able to draw upon earlier studies of words loaned from Te reo Māori (the Māori language) in New Zealand English, Morris’s dictionary was the first to pay attention to words taken from Aboriginal languages in Australia. It also included words that were English in origin but had taken on new meanings peculiar to Australia.
