De verborum significatione 24 December 1474
RCIN 1073010
-
This work is entitled "on the meaning of words" and compiles the meanings, etymologies, and uses of Latin words as well as the legal and cultural context in which they were employed in the Roman Republic and Empire. It is attributed to the second-century grammarian and scholar Sextus Pompeius Festus, although in essence it is a summary of the much longer work by Verrius Flaccus, which spans twenty volumes. De verborum significatione is organised alphabetically by word. Each entry typically includes a definition of the word, an explanation of its origins (etymology), and examples of its use, sometimes including references to Roman legal texts or classical literature.
