A fortnight's ramble to the lakes in Westmoreland, Lancashire and Cumberland / by a Rambler. 1792
RCIN 1072149
-
This 1792 account of a short tour in the Lake District is typical of picturesque literature in the late-eighteenth century. It was written by "A Rambler", otherwise known as Joseph Budworth (from 1811 known as Joseph Palmer), a soldier and writer for the Gentleman's Magazine.
Budworth travelled to the Lake District in July/August 1792 and experienced "one fortnight of constant fine weather". He published this account to serve as a light-hearted guide to tourists who wanted to avoid travelling through Europe on the Grand Tour due to instability in France. The guide is a perfect example of late-eighteenth century travel literature and constantly remarks upon the picturesque sights of the Lake District, portraying the country and its inhabitants as a perfectly quaint, pastoral "Arcadia".
