Biblia latina. With additions by Menardus Monachus before 1474
RCIN 1071469
-
This Bible in Latin was the first edition to include a short theological treatise authored by a monk who calls himself Menardus. Not much is known about him, but as his work is addressed to Jacobus de Ysenaco, he may have been from the area of Eisenach in Germany too. The last leaf of this copy also includes some verses from Guido Vicentinus’ Margarita Bibliae, an early fourteenth-century historical and allegorical interpretation of the Bible, and Eusebian canons. Although Menardus’ text was printed throughout the 1470s, it became superseded by the vastly more popular commentary of the theologian Nicholas of Lyra (c.1270-1349), and did not appear in print after 1480.
Binding description
Quarter crimson goat skin on oak boards, sewn on five double-raised bands. Original goat skin cover pasted to inner boards. Decorative blind and gold tooling, with initials "whs". Rebound in 1930.Provenance
Augustinian Canons of Polling in the diocese of Augsburg (dissolved 1803). An inscription indicates that the volume was bought by Polling in 1774. It was probably sold as a duplicate from the Royal Library in Munich; as the London bookseller Thomas Thorpe (1791-1851) sold a parcel of such books to Bodley in 1837, he was likely the supplier of this one. Bound by WH Smith to a design by Douglas Cockerell. Bought by William IV.
