Colley Cibber (1671–1757) was an actor and theatre manager as well as a playwright and poet. He had success writing plays for his own company, and acting 'fop' roles in comedic plays. He also wrote a popular comic memoir of his life in the theatre entitled ' An Apology for the Life of Colley Cibber.' An ardent supporter of the Hanoverians, he was appointed poet laureate in 1730.
