Thomas Shadwell (c.1640–1692) was a playwright and poet. He found most of his success in writing plays, but was awarded the Poet Laureateship in 1689 after the post was removed from John Dryden. As a protestant and a Whig, Shadwell was a more appealing choice for Laureate to the new monarchs William and Mary. However, his laureate poetry was generally acknowledged to be somewhat tedious.
Provenance
Probably the copy listed in the inventory of George III’s library at Richmond Lodge, prior to its dispersal c. 1766. In the library of George III at Windsor by 1780.
