Barometrographia was the last major work published by the Quaker meteorologist Luke Howard (1772-1864). It contains large circular diagrams of measurements taken at Howard’s home in Tottenham between 1815 and 1834. The diagrams show changes in barometric pressure, weather and phases of the moon and are accompanied by a longer explanation of the year’s weather.
Howard made several important contributions to meteorology, most notably in the classification of clouds in which he revised a system created by the French naturalist Jean-Baptiste Lamarck. Howard’s revision has since become the international standard of cloud classification.
