Romeo and Juliet was printed four times in quarto before being included in the First Folio of 1623. The first quarto (1597) was a 'bad' quarto, written down from memory of those who had ben associated with its performance; the second quarto (1599), a 'good' quarto, was based upon Shakespeare's own papers, and was 'newly corrected, augmented, and amended', being half as long again as the first quarto. This edition, which sets the two editions side by side, was published by the New Shakespere Society (the archaic spelling of the name was deliberate, to differentiate the society from its predecessor the Shakespeare Society), and this specially printed thick paper copy was presented to the Royal Library by Prince Leopold, one of the society's vice-presidents.
