Sidney Lee was one of the editors of the first edition of the Dictionary of National Biography, first produced from 1885. Lee, who had graduated with a degree in modern history from Oxford University, wrote over 800 articles for the dictionary, mainly on Elizabethan persons of note, including one on Shakespeare. His article formed the basis of this biography of Shakespeare, which was first published in 1898. It went through several editions and was greatly expanded in 1915 (see RCIN 1059083). Lee also edited the Oxford facsimile of the First Folio, published in 1902, and in 1906 produced a complete edition of Shakespeare's works.
