John Howe, 4th and last Baron Chedworth, was a reclusive man, interested in the stage and the turf. He passed his life mainly in Suffolk, rarely visiting his estates in Gloucestershire, and spent much of his time in a study of Shakespeare. This work was published after his death by his friend, the musician Thomas Penrice, and contains Chedworth's notes on the readings of the chief Shakespearean commentators of his day, including Samuel Johnson, George Steevens and Edmond Malone.
