Francis Twiss's Complete Verbal Index to the Plays of Shakespeare, Adapted to All the Editions, was published in two volumes in 1805. Unfortunately it indexed merely word by word, without including the line in which the word occurred (as later concordances did). After a fire destroyed 2/3rds of the edition remaining copies were scarce and highly priced. In his earlier years Twiss attended Cambridge University for a year before going to London where he developed an interest in drama, and became acquainted with John Philip Kemble the actor/manager; he later married Kemble’s sister Frances (Fanny).
