William Shakespeare (1564-1616)
Bell's Edition of Shakespeare's plays : as they are now performed at the Theatres Royal in London . . . with notes critical and illustrative by the authors of the Dramatic Censor; v. 1 1774

-
The editions of Shakespeare’s plays produced by the printer/publisher John Bell were rather different form the scholarly editions being produced at the same period by Samuel Johnson, George Steevens and others. They were acting editions, based on the text actually used in the playhouses, and came complete with current cast lists and illustrations (which could also be bought separately). As well as this acting edition, Bell also produced an illustrated literary edition, in 20 volumes, published in 1785-88. This set was printed in 1773-4, and was part of George III’s private library kept at Windsor (as opposed to his scholar’s library kept in Buckingham House, now part of the British Library).
Provenance
From the library of George III at Windsor
