Homer's Iliad was printed many times during the eighteenth century. Along with the Odyssey, it is one of the earliest surviving pieces of Western literature. It tells the story of the legendary Greek siege of the city of Troy and an argument between the leader of the siege, King Agamemnon, and the Greek hero Achilles.
Anne Lefèvre Dacier, better known as Madame Dacier, was a French scholar, translator and editor of cliassical literature. In a period when the education of women rarely reached as far as even a cursory knowledge of the classics, she was able to use her considerable linguistic abilities to earn her living and came to be cited as a leading example of the benefits of women's education. Her prose translation of Homer's Iliad was first published in 1699, followed in 1708 by the Odyssey.
