Seneca the Younger is well known to history both as tutor to the Emperor Nero and as a writer of prose and poetry. The most important of his surviving poetical works were his nine tragedies. This is the first printed edition. It was produced in Ferrara, which at the time was a centre for artists and writers from all over Europe.
Binding description
Rebound in the Buckingham House bindery in the eighteenth century. The simple panel design uses a variety of three- and two-line roll tools, with floral lozenges at the corners of the centre frame and a decorated roll inside the inner frame. The Royal Arms appear in the centre. The spine is tooled with other floral devices, a lozenge, corner tools and roll tools.
Provenance
Presented to King George III by Jacob Bryant (no.9 in his list). Sheet a3/a8 has been substituted from a copy with the arms of the Abbey of Petershausen (near Constance, Germany), which is dated 1521. The rest of the book was owned by an Italian family, given that an unidentified coat of arms is contemporary with typical Italian decoration of initials with vinestem motifs. A note of donation written above the colophon refers to Charles Spencer, Duke of Marlborough (1706–58), whom gave the book to Jacob Bryant by 1755.
