This volume brings together different Latin compositions in verse by Sebastian Brant, a German humanist and satirist. Born in Strasbourg, he studied philosophy at the University of Basel but later took up law, completing his doctorate in 1489. He would practise as a lawyer throughout his life.
The poems in this edition mostly concern religion and faith, but also include panegyrics on the Emperor Maximilian and verses on historical and contemporary figures. They were edited by Brant’s friend and printer Johann Bergmann von Olpe (c.1455-c.1532), who published the first edition of this title. This second edition, printed by Johann (Reinhard) Grüninger in the same year, includes the carnivalesque play Scenica progymnasmata by the contemporary humanist Johannes Reuchlin.
