Much like his collection of poems, Tristia, the letters describe his life in Tomis and his yearning to return to Rome. Ovid would remain in Tomis until his death in AD 17.
Provenance
Believed to have been bound for the playwright Hilaire Bernard de Requeleyne, Baron de Longepierre (1659-1721), bears his golden fleece (toison d'or) tool. Bears the bookplate of Queen Victoria, used 1863-1901. Likely acquired for the Royal Library before 1860.
