Throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth century, the British Museum had amassed one of the most extensive collections of bird specimens from around the world. From 1874, this catalogue of the ornithological collection of the museum was published. It was begun by Richard Bowdler Sharpe, curator of the collection, who contributed to 13 and a half volumes. The work would eventually cover 27 volumes and was completed in 1898.
