This book is one of an eight-volume set edited by the Shakespearean actor Sir Henry Irving, who in 1895 became the first actor to be knighted. Irving presented the volumes to Queen Mary when she was Duchess of York, as a gift on her marriage to the future King George V in 1893. The actor inscribed the first volume to her with a quote from Othello:
'Hail to thee, Lady!
and the grace of
heaven
Before behind thee, and on every hand
enwheel thee round.
