John Bell was a publisher and newspaper proprietor who was noted for commissioning attractive artwork to accompany his printed texts. His bookshop in the Strand was known as the ‘British Library’ and he was characterised as ‘a mischievous spirit, the very Puck of a bookseller’ by the publisher and editor Charles Knight. Bell’s British Theatre collected 140 plays in twenty-one volumes.
