This guide to the natural history of Brighton was written by Mary Philadelphia Merrifield, a self-taught artist and amateur scientist.

Initially a writer on art theory, from 1857, Merrifield devoted her time to writing guidebooks on Brighton and its natural history. Using her passion for botany, she became an authority on the study of seaweed and marine algae and in later years helped to arrange and display the natural history collections of the Brighton Museum.
