La Gloria del cavallo / Pasqual Caracciolo. 1566
RCIN 1055285
-
This is the first edition of the Neapolitan nobleman Pasquale Caracciolo’s treatise on horses and horsemanship. La Gloria del Cavallo looked not only at the training and care of horses, but also the long relationship between people and horses. He also applied contemporary medical theories of the four humours to the various illnesses experienced by the animals.
The title page is inscribed with the name of a 'Henry Cavendyshe'. This may be Henry Cavendish, 2nd Duke of Newcastle (1630–1691), whose father William Cavendish (1593–1676) wrote an influentual book on horses, the Methode Nouvelle de Dresser les Chevaux, which itself acknowledges the influence of Caracciolo's Gloria in its opening pages (for copies in the Royal Library, see RCIN 1070972, RCIN 1070974, and RCIN 1070973). The Gloria is not listed in the sale catalogue of William and Henry's libraries (Bibliotheca nobilissimi principis Johannis Ducis de Novo-Castro, &c. ..., 1719), but the absence of equestrian literature in general from this catalogue suggests that these books may have met with a different fate.
Provenance
Acquired by George IV when Prince Regent, at the sale of the library of Lord Heathfield, 1814 (RA GEO 28559). Bears the bookplate of George IV's library at Carlton House and that of Queen Victoria, used 1863-1901.
