Hippolyte Jamain was a French horticulturalist who specialised in growing roses. In 1873, he published this book on the flowers.
Jamain came from a family of horticulturalists and in 1845, established a greenhouse nursery in Paris where he grew ornamental plants such as azaleas and camellias popular with nineteenth century gardeners. He was well respected among French horticulturalists and, following a successful display at the Exposition Universelle in 1867, was awarded the Legion d’Honneur by Napoleon III.
In the course of his life, Jamain acquired around 20 different rose cultivars, specialising in remontant hybrids, plants that bloomed more than once a season.
