Frederick Manson Bailey was a botanist active in Queensland during the nineteenth century. His works did much to help in the understanding of the plants of the region.
Born in London, Bailey travelled to Australia as a child when the family moved to Adelaide, where his father was appointed botanist to the colony. After three years in New Zealand, in 1861, Bailey settled in Queensland and began to study the plant life there. He published several monographs on Queensland and wider Australian ferns and guides to the botany of Queensland. In 1881, he was appointed colonial botanist, a post he held until his death in 1915.
This 1912 catalogue of Queensland plants was an extended edition of Bailey’s Catalogue of the Indigenous and Naturalised Plants of Queensland, first printed in 1890. It serves as an illustrated guide to the flora of the area.
