James Edward Sowerby was a botanical artist active in the mid-to-late nineteenth century. Coming from a family of botanical painters, his father and grandfather both published books on English plants, it is likely that he began illustrating at a young age. Between 1855 and 1862, he collaborated with Charles Johnson and his son Charles Pierpoint Johnson on several books for which they had written the text. This book is a new edition of Charles Pierpoint Johnson’s British Wild Flowers (1858-60), printed in 1890.
