This translation of Carl Linnaeus’s sexual classification system was published by the Botanical Society at Lichfield in 1787. Founded by Erasmus Darwin, the society had only three members: Darwin, the landowner Sir Brooke Boothby and John Jackson, proctor of Lichfield Cathedral. It was set up to translate Linnaeus’s works into English and is notable for giving many species common English names that remain in use today.
