Born in the first century AD, the Roman writer Martial is best known for his twelve book work Epigrams, a collection of witty sayings that satirised city life and the scandalous lives of his fellow Romans. Martial’s epigrams were very popular on their rediscovery in the Renaissance. Several collections of them were printed, such as this 1539 edition from Paris, and writers tried to emulate their styles.
