This book listing works on the Americas was published in 1789 by the lawyer Leman Thomas Rede.
As well as his career in the law, he had studied at the Inner Temple, Rede was also a newspaper writer and translator. He was not successful in any of his endeavours and by 1802 has moved with his family to Hamburg to escape his debts.
Rede died in Hamburg in 1810 but his wife returned to London with their five children who included the novelist Mary Grimstone (1796-1869), the prolific playwright William Leman Rede (1802-47) and the actor Leman Thomas Tertius Rede (1799-1832). The latter two were prominent features in early nineteenth century theatre, writing and performing many farces and melodramas. Mary, meanwhile, is known as the writer of one of the earliest Australian novels. She was also an early socialist and wrote on the subject of women's rights. -
