Heinrich Bullinger (1504–1575) was a Swiss theologian and Reformer. Converting to Protestantism as an undergraduate at the University of Cologne, Bullinger rose to become a leader of the Reformation in Switzerland, following in the footsteps of his mentor and colleague Ulrich Zwingli (1484–1531). His prolific output as a writer surpassed even that of Luther and Calvin.
A hundred sermons upon the Apocalips is an English translation by John Daus (Dawes) of Bullinger's commentaries on the Revelation of St John. Originally written in Latin and first published in 1557 as In Apocalypsim Jesu Christi, the text was immediately popular, with German and French translations appearing in 1558. Whereas many Reformers avoided the Book of Revelation—indeed Luther disputed its place in the Biblical canon—Bullinger believed that its often challenging passages held vital importance 'for us also in our time . . . which are in the ende of the worlde' (p. 8). In true Reformation spirit, his sermons strongly identify the 'Pope's Kingdom' with the prophesied reign of the Antichrist.
