During the reign of Elizabeth I, special forms of prayer were regularly published by the queen’s printer Christopher Barker to mark significant occasions or to pray for salvation in times of turmoil. Such prayers also provided parishioners with news of important events both at home and abroad. This collection of prayers covering the period 1563 to 1594 contains those issued on the occasion of the London plague of 1563, the 1566 Ottoman invasion of Hungary, the St Bartholomew’s Day Massacre of 1572 and the 1580 Straits of Dover earthquake.
