4to. One of two texts bound in a composite volume.
This pamphlet contains the text of a sermon given by Johannes Bugenhagen at the funeral of Martin Luther (22 February 1546 at the Schlosskirche in Wittenberg). In his sermon, Bugenhagen, a close friend and colleague of Luther, likens the great reformer to the angel described in Revelation who carries the 'everlasting gospel' over the world (Revelation 14:16). Following an account of Luther's dying moments, Bugenhagen closes with the prophetic words first written by Luther in 1537 and intended for his epitaph: Pestis eram vivus, moriens tua mors ero Papa ('In life I was your plague, Pope; in death I will be your death').
This may be a pirated edition of the text originally printed at Wittenberg by Georg Rhau: no printer or publisher's name is given, and the typeface differs from that used by Rhau (cf. USTC nos. 647598 and 647599).Provenance
Formerly part of the library of Prince Albert at Buckingham Palace. Transferred to the Royal Library in January 1898; recorded in accessions register in Februrary 1898.
