4to. : [58] p. One of two texts in a composite volume.
Translated in English as 'A letter of consolation to all who suffer persecution because of God’s Word', this work of martyrology was written by Martin Luther in the aftermath of the Diet of Worms (January–May 1521) at which he was branded a heretic. Addressed to Hartmut von Cronberg (1488–1549), a young German nobleman with Protestant sympathies, the Missive encourages the reader in faith and fortitude amidst the rising threat of persecution.
This first edition, published in Wittenberg in 1522, includes the remarks by von Cronberg omitted in later editions. The woodcut border on the title-page depicting a printing press, animals, and peasants, is by Hans Cranach (c.1513–1537).
