Between 1847 and 1849, the botanist Joseph Dalton Hooker travelled to the Himalayas to study the plants of the region. On his return to Britain in 1851, after a two-year expedition in Bengal, Hooker had collected around 7,000 species and managed to secure a grant to classify and name them. As a result, he published several books on the botany of the Himalayas.
This is the first of these books, The Rhododendrons of Sikkim-Himalaya, edited by his father Sir William Jackson Hooker and published in 1849. The book introduced 25 new rhododendron species to Britain and sparked a craze for rhododendrons among Victorian gardeners.
