Nicolaus Thomas Host was a Croatian botanist who served as physician to Francis II, Holy Roman Emperor. This book is his botany of the grasses of the Austrian Empire. Host was well respected among Austrian naturalists and in 1812, the botanist Leopold Trattinnick named the genus Hosta, a group of plants now commonly found in gardens, after him.
