Hussein Ali Khan
The History of the reign of Tipu Sultan / Hussein Ali Khan ; translated from the Persian by Colonel W. Miles. (Oriental Translation Fund). 1864
RCIN 1051455
-
The second part of an English translation of the Nishan-i Haydari, a history of Haydar Ali and Tipu Sultan, complied by Colonel W. Miles. In the dedication, Miles asserts that his translation was based on a manuscript in the possession of Queen Victoria (see RCIN 1005027). The text represents Tipu not as the shahid (‘martyr’) venerated by his followers, but as ‘a bigoted Musalman’ and ‘a great tyrant’ which helped to shape the subsequent portrayal of him in histories of South Asia as a cruel Islamic fundamentalist.
