French scholar Josheph Garcin de Tassy (1794-1878) dedicated his life to the study of the Hindustani language (Hindi/Urdu) and was one of the founding members of the Société Asiatique (Asiatic Society of France). This three volume History of Hindustani Literature was his most important work, an Urdu translation of which was made for an Indian audience during his lifetime.
