Contemporary black goatskin binding, with gold- and blind-tooling on both sides and spine. Design identical on both sides: outer border formed of one double and one single fillet, interspersed with blind-tooled multiple fillet lines and a series of blind-tooled individual gouges, applied in an interlocking semi-circular pattern; inner ‘panel’ design formed of an outer triple and inner double fillet, the inner double fillet border surmounted by a flower-head and looping vine roll; outer border of the panel blind-tooled with the same interlocking semi-circular pattern, this time surmounted by circle tools; inner section of the panel blind-tooled with two large multiple-fillet crosses, filled in each compartment with the a semi-circular, vine and sprouting flower design. On the outer sides of the panel, four gold-tooled triangular motifs formed of the same flower-head and swirl tool, rotated, with a trefoil in the centre and an outer border of drawer-handle tools, alternately reversed; in each of the outer corners of the panel, a gold-tooled Tudor rose, surmounted by the crowned monogram of Queen Anne, addorsed with palm fronds (RAAR); between the panel and the outer border, a blind-tooled pattern of swirling vines, circles and sun-heads. In the centre, the gold-tooled arms of Queen Anne, surrounded by the garter, surmounted by a crown, with the initials ‘AR’ to either side and the motto ‘SEMPER EADEM’ surrounded by palm fronds to either side of the garter buckle. Sides and insides of both boards gold-tooled with flower-head and vine roll. Spine divided into seven compartments by raised bands; each compartment tooled with a triple fillet border; first, third, fifth and seventh compartments tooled in the centre with crowned monogram of Queen Anne (RAAR), with swirl tool in each of the corners; second, fourth and sixth compartments tooled with the repeated monogram of Queen Anne (RAR) in a ‘cross’ design, with the same swirl tool in each of the corners; head and tail of spine tooled with flower-head and vine roll.
