This book brings together texts on logic by Aristotle and an introduction by third-century philosopher Porphyry. It is one of three editions that were designed and printed in the Low Countries for the use of the students at the University of Leuven. Thanks to its surviving fifteenth- and sixteenth-century statutes, we know that the University's Faculty of Arts had commissioned these texts from the printer Dirk Martens. The Royal Library copy is a previously unknown edition possibly made between 1504 and 1509. This may be inferred by the fact that Nicolaus de Castro, beadle of the Faculty of Arts, signs the book (he had been in that position since 1504), and that the corrections to be made to the text in the leaves of errata appear in an edition of 1509 (now Bibliothèque nationale du Luxembourg, L.P. 4165). Since no colophon survives, the precise time of production remains obscure; however, a comparison with an edition of 1525 (now Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, R2B1503) confirms that the layout, decoration, typeface and text were those used by Martens.
